STOP The Lies and Start Doing What God Told You To Do
By: Rev. Joe Kramer
(26) If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. (27) Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
-James 1:26-27 (NIV)
I was recently quoted a statistic. The statistic states that 82% of people would visit a church if they were asked. But only about 2% of people who are regular attendees of a church will ask anyone to come in a given year. Really? WOW! That is why I thought this scripture was timely today.
In verse twenty-six it says that if someone is religious. STOP. Most people who come to church do consider themselves religious. They say they are Christians. They may very well be Christians, but aren’t acting like it. The rest of the verse speaks directly to gossip and dissension. Too many wonderful ministries and churches have been destroyed because of gossip, false allegations, and out-and-out lies. People ask why the church is failing in today’s society. This is one of the main reasons why. These kinds of things need to stop in order for the Christian message to advance. How many people have turned away from God due to gossip? We may never know, but I bet it is a lot.
Verse twenty-seven says that true religion that is pure and faultless is to look after orphans and widows. Why? Two-thousand years ago these groups of people were especially vulnerable. They had no one to look after them. James is saying that we should take our energies that we have wasted on destroying people and put it to good use by building people up. We should take care of the less fortunate and stop with the negative attitudes and start serving others in the Love of God. We are told to keep ourselves from being influenced by these negative things that are going on by people. We are told to keep ourselves in the right attitude and pure before a loving God.
Where are you today? Are you gossiping? Do you have negative attitudes in your church? Are you working in your church? Are you inviting people to come to Christ and to your church? If not then you need to repent. Stop with the negativity and start working for God! The Choice is yours.
P.S. By the way the attached video is fantastic! If you do not have a church let me personally invite you to go to a church this Sunday, to a local church near you.
